Those familiar with the Gorillapod know how its flexible legs allow for a near-limitless range of mounting options.  We won't pretend that the iPad FlexStand is anywhere near the Gorillapod's level of cleverness, but it does offer a generous level of flexibility.

From the looks of it, you can use the fully-adjustable legs to mount the iPad on suspended hooks.  The stand wasn't built for that, though, so you might be at risk of dropping the slate if you try to get too creative.  Experiment at your own risk.

The FlexStand is made up of five lightweight, flexible and resilient steel legs - four are meant to attach to the corners of your iPad, with the fifth intended to provide leverage like a kick stand.  Because of the fully-adjustable legs, you can set it up at practically any angle on most any type of surface, including flat, sloped and, even, irregular ones.

It measures 1 x 11.5 x 1.5 inches and weighs 5.2 ounces, making it easy to stow away on your bag when taking the iPad on the road.  Since it's flexible, you can even twist it into whatever space is available in your bag.  Plus, you can probably use it as a stand for other gadgets too (like cellphones and GPS), provided they can fit on the feet, which have been sized to hold Apple's tablet.

Frankly, I don’t think there's a single iPad stand that's as flexible in what it can do, while remaining extremely portable, as the iPad FlexStand.  Thinkgeek has it on stock for an affordable $29.99.

One of the things I dislike about buying iPad accessories is how expensive they can get.  What about the cheapskates in the audience (hint: me)?  Turns out Digitals On Demand has a 15-Item Accessory Bundle just for us.

If you've been planning to take a trip down the mall to pick up some gear for your iPad, but haven't gotten around to it, you should definitely give this set a look.  It has most of the starter accessories you'll probably need, plus a few you might not have even considered otherwise.

One of the biggest value in Digitals On Demand's 15-Item Accessory Bundle has to be the cases.  This comes with three of them - a black vein silicone cover (squishy with a cute design), a crystal clear case with detachable kick stand (fingerprint-resistant and comes with a hole so you can hang it on a hook) and a portfolio case with kick stand (made with premium leather with a light magnet on the closure).  These three alone probably fulfill the price of purchase, so having 12 others onboard makes it seem like a really good deal.

What else will you get?  There's a screen protector (not fingerprint-proof, though), a robotic reading light (we're not sure what this is for, since the iPad is LED-backlit), a white pair of in-ear headphones with mic, a stylus pen, an earphone splitter, a wall charger, a car charger, a USB sync cable, a retractable USB cable (for data only), a small fishbone cord wrap (good for headphone wires only) and a drawstring travel pouch.  You probably won't use some of that stuff, but at this price, you might as well hoard them.

The Digitals On Demand 15-item Accessory Bundle is available from Amazon for as low as $39.99.

Home automation is one area where the iPad will undoubtedly be used extensively for.  With the wealth of things it can be configured to do, the tablet easily beats traditional slabs of dedicated remotes often identified with home automation systems.  Enter Creston iPanel, an iPad case that works with your iPad's built-in WiFi to turn it into a remote with hard buttons.

One of the major complaints about turning the iPad into a home automation remote is the lack of physical buttons.  Touchscreen remote apps just haven't matured enough to be functional equivalents of their traditional counterparts.  Essentially, they're similar to dedicated touchscreen remotes - an absolute pain to use.

The Crestron iPanel addresses that problem by turning out a case that you can wrap around your iPad and connect via the multi-pin connector, essentially turning it into a giant physical remote.   It has thirteen hard buttons spread across the left and right sides (landscape mode), including four for navigation, two for volume and individual ones for a variety of functions (Mute, Lights, Home, Guide, Info, Select and Exit).

Obviously, this is designed to work with Crestron's iPad app, although the company says it's still ironing out the software/hardware interface.  It can be used even without the app, though, provided you pair it with a Crestron controller over WiFi.

While the Crestron iPanel is obviously a neat solution, it doesn't exactly address one of the main reasons why you'd rather use an iPad, instead of buying a remote: the price.  They're selling the hard button-equipped iPad case at a hefty $500.

Who says all an iPad cover does is keep your tablet protected from scratches and dust?  Not the case with the Kensington PowerBack, which throws in a backup battery and a kickstand  to go with its iPad-casing duties.

Despite measuring a sleek 1.6 x 9.4 x 13.8 inches, the accessory manages to cram in a 4,400 mAh battery module onboard, feeding your tablet an extra 5 hours of use.  It also includes a microUSB charge and sync port, allowing you to connect your iPad to a computer without requiring an extra dock.

The Kensington PowerBack case has a soft-touch finish, affording you comfortable use, while offering ample protection.  A very useful kickstand can be pulled out of the rear side, which you can use to prop the iPad up at three positions - landscape viewing, portrait viewing and typing mode.  Other features include LED gauges on the bottom of the case (to clue you in to how much charge is left) and a speaker deflector for unimpeded sound.

Overall, it sounds like a pretty solid all-in-one, which, somehow, manages not to bulk up your iPad the way extra batteries normally would.  Price is a bit steep at $130, but the versatility should make it worth every penny.

If you're going to dress the iPad up with a back cover, you might as well get one that will afford it a literal plethora of mounting options.  That's what Vogel promises with their Basecover, a sleek accessory with a special connector that allows it to work with their upcoming range of mounts and stands.

The central component of the company's Mount & Cover System, the BaseCover dresses the iPad in a slim shell with a soft, tactile coating that adds extra body to your tablet.  While intended to  attach to the backside, it can be slotted in reverse to protect the screen during travel, too.  An aluminum connector sits right at the center, which you can use with various accessories for extending your tablet's usability.

Vogel currently has three accessories designed to work with the cover: WallMount, TableStand and CarMount.  The names alone should clue you in about what they're for.

  • WallMount is a cylindrical contraption that can be screwed onto any surface.  Once installed, you can simply snap the BaseCover in via the connector, allowing you to set the iPad up securely.  When mounted, it can freely rotate a full 360 degrees, giving you plenty of viewing options.
  • TableStand adds a standing assembly to the back of the BaseCover, similar to legs from old-school picture frames.
  • CarMount affixes to a car seat's headrest and, like the WallMount, allows the BaseCover to snap right in, giving backseat passengers hands-free iPad viewing.

Europe will get the BaseCover starting October, with US shipments beginning in 2011.  It ships with one WallMount and is priced at 79.99 Euros (around $100).  Prices for separate accessories have not yet been released.

Apple wireless keyboard emerges as the overall winner

With the more than anticipated demand for the iPad, Apple had to create some accessories that would make the device become more user friendly. The iPad wasn't created to be a portable pocket device, it is much larger and packs a bigger punch than something you could carry around in your pocket. If you wanted a pocket device, they've already got you covered with the iTouch or iPhone. Now, Apple has brought the miniature portable computer into their spectrum of quality products. Apple has never failed to produce something that is going to shock the world and change the way we use our favorite gadgets. Recently, the iPad has grown so immensely popular that availability has been delayed to other countries until they can effectively catch up with the demands in the United States.

Our reason for acquiring the iPad tablet was to see if we can replace our Windows 7 laptop. This was probably not the best reason for getting an iPad as it wasn't exactly intended for this. It doesn't have an operating system like a laptop would with a desktop and programs that you can easily click and drag and move around. It is somewhat more of a reliable picture, movie, and gaming device. However, the variety of accessories that are being sold for the device as well as the applications that can change the functionality of the iPad and provide you with a device that is far more capable of replacing your laptop are telling a different story. More and more we are seeing developers focusing on desktop and computer related applications and now we are seeing accessories providing this kind of functionality.

Something that especially appeared to us was the wireless keyboard as well as the keyboard dock from Apple. Both keyboards are suitable for different occasions and will probably be preferred depending on what you're doing. However, it is recommended that you buy them both because it would simply be hard to choose one over the other. However, if you are on a tight budget you will see from this review that the wireless bluetooth keyboard is far superior over the dock keyboard.

When we got to start using the keyboards we instantly noticed the positives and negatives of both of them. Lets start with the keyboard dock. One thing we love is that your iPad is never going to die on you while you're using it. The keyboard dock provides a complete charging station to ensure that you won't drain your battery while you are typing away. Another positive feature of the keyboard dock is that it has been designed for upright positions. Meaning if you are at a desk, a table, or any flat surface where you are going to be sitting in front of it then it is going to suit your needs perfectly. However, one huge negative aspect about the Apple keyboard dock is its functionality while you are using it like you would a laptop. We've found it can be rather difficult to use while in your lap. While not impossible, it does pose a bit a challenge and a couple times our iPad tipped over backwards while in use.

This is one of the main reasons why we quickly turned to the wireless keyboard to see what it had in store for us. Right away we noticed the flexibility with this device. Could you ask for anything better than a wireless keyboard? No cord, no mess, no restraints. It was a perfect match for us and it will probably be a perfect match for many people out there. Whatever angle you are in, whatever surface you want to rest the keyboard on the wireless keyboard is going to suit your every need. There is nothing holding you back. Something else that was very promising is the fact that it works perfectly in your lap. We had absolutely no problem with the keyboard in our lap. Something that did pose a problem was not an issue with the keyboard at all but was exactly what made the keyboard dock a strong competitor. If you don't own a stand or a dock for your iPad, you won't be able to have it sit upright in your lap.

Thankfully, there are lots of keyboard docks and stand available online but the downfall of this is that you have to spend more money. We already spent a lot of money getting our hands on the iPad. Why would we want to spend even more money acquiring all of the additional accessories that help make our other accessories better? Well, we didn't want to but we are happy that we did. Shortly later we couldn't resist from ordering an iPad stand that would effectively hold the iPad while we used the wireless keyboard. When it arrived, the connection between the two was a match made in heaven and the setup worked perfectly. Something we would highly recommend though is that you get the least bulky stand or dock that you can. You don't want to have something huge resting in your lap while you are trying to use your keyboard.

The keyboard dock and wireless keyboard are both full size accessories. They provide you with fairly large physical buttons that is nice when you are not accustom to the touch screen platform on the iPad. Typing away with a touch screen poses a challenge and it can be difficult to get used to. Even as an experienced user we still had our troubles. These keyboards are perfect when you need to write up anything that is more then a paragraph or more of text. The dock will charge your iPad as well as provide some special keys for iPad features. It has a connector in the back and a port to plugin to the electric outlet with the USB power adapter. The dock can easily sync to your computer and work hand in hand with accessories like the iPad Camera Connection Kit. The audio connectors will still be accessible even with the dock intact. The wireless keyboard is thin and takes full advantage of Bluetooth technology as well as providing the kind of functionality you get out of the keyboard dock.

iPad Camera Connection Kit Hands On Review

by admin on April 16, 2010

With the iPad quickly becoming one of the biggest selling devices on the market, we had to see some good accessories coming our way as well. Thankfully, Apple has introduced different types of keyboards, a case and now the iPad Camera Connection Kit. Undoubtedly something that is going to make consumers very happy. Just about everyone uses a digital camera now. While there is clear evidence at stores and such that people are still getting their photos developed and using old school types of cameras, the majority of people have moved on to digital photography. Digital pictures are great, once you take the picture they can be accessed right away from your computer, your camera and now your iPad too.

Whether you are capturing some memorable moments from your vacation, important event, or perhaps just some pictures you took during your day, the iPad Connection Kit was designed for you as a digital camera user. With the iPad being the kind of device that wasn't intended to replace your laptop but more provide a convenient housing location for your most important things like pictures, movies, music, and did I say pictures? It seems like family photographs have become just about everyone's most prized possessions that they store. What's great about the iPad is that it gives you that large, vibrant big screen that can really make those images pop. Digital technology has come a long way and it is really paying off. Could you have imagined us being able to store, share, and upload pictures in the blink of an eye only seconds after you took them? Surely no one saw anything this amazing coming anytime soon and with gadgets like the iPad making their usability more efficient we will be seeing more of them in the future ensuring that your iPad is going to be a piece of the puzzle in technology that will last. It is unlikely that there will be a device that comes to surpass what the iPad has accomplished anytime soon. This has been assuring to know that our investment in the iPad was well worth the troubles of tightening our budget so that we could be one of the first to get our hands on the device. However we were not alone in this decision because all over the United States the iPad has been selling more devices than Apple could have ever predicted. They have sold so many iPads that they have delayed production for international buyers until they can catch up on the demands in the United States.

The iPad Camera Connection Kit is the ultimate accessory to give you the kinds of plug ins that most digital cameras and digital recorders use in order to transfer pictures and videos. The majority of digital devices will operate transfers through the use of a USB cable or SD card memory slot. Almost all computers of today's age have USB plug ins for exactly this type of situation, when you need to plug in something as important as your camera. Apple didn't want to leave you in the dark with this one and that's where the Camera Connection Kit comes into play. Whether you have a camera that relies on USB connection capability to transfer your files or SD cards to transfer files, there is an option for you. All you have to do is simply plug in the Camera Connection Kit to the bottom of your device, right where you normally plug in the charger in order to charge your battery. Depending on which of the connection kits you used, you will now have the ability to plug in a USB cord or an SD card to the bottom of the connection kit. If you are using the USB cord you will need to plug the other side into your digital camera. This will provide you with an active link between the two devices. When you transfer photos, they will automatically be placed in your "photos" application on the iPad.

Apple definitely managed to provide an affordable and highly efficient accessory with the Camera Connection Kit. We couldn't think of anything more important than USB and SD card functionality but that brings me to our next point...

Something we thought was really a negative aspect about this was the fact that you have to buy the Camera Connection Kit in the first place. So many other products offer USB connections straight into the device. Why did Apple not incorporate this? Well were not exactly sure. Perhaps a traditional USB plug in on the device would be to big and would have had to make the entire design more bulky and they didn't want that. That answer doesn't seem very plausible considering they make Mini USB connections that could easily plug into your camera through whatever input connection the camera has. Not to mention that Mac computers have Firewire ports. Firewire has faster transfer rates that USB, so why didn't Mac use Firewire?.. it's their signature connector and everything. Regardless, there is nothing that can be taken away from the iPad Camera Connection Kit itself, but these are some things you can question about the iPad in general. Perhaps it is just more efficient to buy the connection kits and do all of the connections this way anyhow, but to me it seems like a negative aspect to the iPad not only because it takes longer to plugin the connection kits, but it also adds more bulk to the device and brings in the possibility that I could lose the kits. Making us spend more money on something that should have been on the design of the iPad to begin with isn't gaining any additional points. However, I feel it would be unjustified to give the iPad Camera Connection Kit anything below a 10.

Apple iPad Keyboard Dock

by admin on April 12, 2010

Everyone who owns and iPad is going to quickly discover the troublesome experience that learning to type on a touchscreen is going to present. It's not an easy skill to acquire if you have never had experience with a touch screen device. Rather, it grows on you throughout your use of the device and users seem to pick up the experience rather slowly. However, within a few days of using your tablet you should be at least functional with the keyboard. It's not built incredibly difficult, it's just that you probably wont type as fast or nearly as efficiently as you could on a physical and externally docked keyboard.

Apple seems to want to solve this problem for everyone by releasing the newest line in accessories including the Apple iPad Keyboard Dock. The Keyboard Dock is said to be one of the most functional and highly desired items that people will want to buy for their tablet. Perhaps the only thing your iPad is missing from becoming a full fledged computer is a more efficient way to write and type on your iPad. With so many available applications assisting you with things such as downloading, quicker access to email, web browsing, file transferring, and basically everything that you could do on a Windows or Mac operating system computer, the iPad is looking like the portable laptop of the future. Those who have gotten their hands on this new iPad accessory are saying that they couldn't have done it better themselves.

The iPad Keyboard Dock is about as worthy to become their dock and type device as anything they could have imagined. It doesn't take up a lot of room either. By docking your device you save a lot of your desktop space, or rather your lap space. Not to mention there is a extendable plug in that can provide you with some extra room for you iPad keyboard. Not everyone wants to dock their keyboard and have it pressed snug against their iPad. Depending on the way you're holding the iPad or the environment you find yourself in, docking the keyboard could become quite bothersome and be a real downfall of this accessory. Well thanks to Apple and the cord that makes your keyboard extendable, you now have a more functional and spacious accessory. The Apple iPad Keyboard Dock is a definite must have for anyone who owns this awesome device.
